Every couple’s wedding day is unique and special, because it is personal to them.  But how to make your wedding feel unique and special to the rest of the world? This month we are celebrating all things Alternative Weddings. The quirky, the different, the extraordinary. We will be shining a light on Vendors, styling and tips that can help you get the most out of your Alternative Wedding dreams. Each week we will focus on a different element, from Fashion to Food, Venues to Entertainment, but let’s kick off the merriment with an overview.

Alternative Weddings have grown hugely popular over the last few years. Social media is ablaze with quirky, different weddings chock full with a Couple’s personality and creative choices. From vintage to DIY weddings, high-end to microweddings, there are plenty of ways you can add a touch whimsy, fun and personality to your special day. From a stylistic statement to just thoughtful finishing touches, you can have as much or as little of the Alternative factor as you can dream of. It’s all about opting for something a little different from the norm and making your wedding experience unique to you.

Need some more inspiration? Here are some top tips on how your wedding can stand out from the crowd.

Alternative Wedding Fashion

Flaunt Your Fashionable Side

Fashion is a key contributing factor, when considering the tone of your special day. If you’re having a Vintage wedding for example, you will probably be keen to find a dress that is in keeping with a particular era etc. But, with an Alternative wedding, you can throw the rule book out! You can show off your personality and that of your beloved and wedding party. Encourage freedom of choice and let people’s eclectic style shine through. Opt for varying fabric choices, bold colours, great texture. Get creative and have fun with it. How about a glittering rose gold dress? A floral head piece? Or a sparkly pair of shoes?

For the man in your life, how about a gorgeous vintage suit? Some Tweed, perhaps? Local company, Vintage Suit Hire, will let you rent a gorgeous tweed suit from as little as £95. Great if you’re looking for something less traditional. You can give your groomsmen amazing menswear without it costing the earth.

Accessories are a great way to add an Alternative twist, especially if you’re trying to plan your wedding on a tight budget. It gives you the chance to get creative!

Choose fabulous florals that are fresh and wild, think about your bouquet as a statement, or why not opt for a floral headpiece? Chat to your florist, like local green fingered guru, Cottage Garden Wedding Flowers, about what you want, take pictures that inspire you.

Alternative Wedding Food

Upgrade Your Feast

Moving away from the traditional three course sit down meal is a great way to weave in some Alternative flair. As is upgrading your dining props!  You could hire or borrow fabulous vintage china for a gorgeous mismatched effect.

Indulge in a sumptuous Champagne Afternoon Tea, or if you are looking for something completely different, a food truck is fun and trendy choice to make.

Multi-award winning street food company La Flamenca offers tapas and churros for your guests to indulge in the evening. They won’t be expecting that! The interactivity of having to visit the food truck, is a key part to an Alternative day- and great if your friends are foodies! You can find some incredible dining options this way. Having your guests be active participants in the day, keeps it personal and playful.

Alternative Wedding Venues and Styling

Celebrate your Venue:

Why settle for ordinary when you can be extraordinary. From choosing an unusual space, to decorating your dream venue with some lovely touches. Don’t feel you have to be constrained by traditional wedding venues either, some amazing floral designs can transform a colder, more industrial space to something truly spectacular. Make it personal to you.

If you are looking for something completely unique, start from scratch! Dry hire a venue and kit out the entire space as you wish. It’s a lot of work, but it will certainly be your wedding your way.

This is very popular with outdoor spaces. You can transform fields or farmland with Tipis and embrace being outdoors. Tipis4Hire offer a wide selection of styles and sizes of fabulous Tipis. Add some hay bales for a country feel or, for a more luxurious feel, hire luxury furniture – the juxtaposition of the two is so quirky and perfect for this Alternative trend.

If you had your heart set on an unusual space, you could formally marry at a registry office and then invite your guests to a blessing and wedding party in the space of your dreams. Celebrants are a great way to facilitate this – we recommend Tony Winyard AKA the Wedding Maker – who brings real joy to the weddings he officiates.

Alternative Wedding Entertainment

Entertain and Amaze

This is another great opportunity for you to choose something that you love. Shun tradition and have whatever makes you and your guests happy! With so many different types of great entertainment at your fingertips, the choice is yours to suit your special day. From caricaturists to magicians or jukeboxes to live bands, there are plenty of different choices – you can even hire a firedancer. And, why not, it is a party afterall ?!
